Redesign of the Nickelization platform

“Nickelization” is the internal platform of Norilsk Nickel for employees

The platform with gamification elements is designed for interaction between company employees and is an important part of work and non-work processes, helping employees adapt to the company, feel like part of the team, and also take part in events and various activities.

For the platform to successfully cope with its tasks, we needed:

Platform mechanics

“Nickelization” is essentially an entire eco-system that includes functionality in various areas. Within the platform, company employees have the opportunity to communicate with each other, see the progress of their colleagues and share their own achievements, take part in competitions, quizzes and surveys, and even buy accessories and souvenirs with the company’s logo in the online store.

Personal Area

The personal account on the platform is designed according to the principle of the social networks that are favorite and familiar to users, so that the experience of interacting with it is as clear and comfortable as possible.

It contains all the information about the employee: his awards (badges and “thank you” from colleagues), the number of “nickels” in the account, an activity feed that includes all the user’s latest actions on the platform, and much more.

Shop

The opportunity to receive a souvenir with the company logo is an important part of the cultural life of the Norilsk Nickel company, which helps employees feel like part of the team.

Each employee of the company can purchase goods with the company logo, for example, a notebook and a T-shirt, which can only be paid for in the platform currency - “nickels”, which of course helps to increase the activity of employees (since “nickels” can be obtained by participating in competitions, helping their colleagues, etc.)

Other sections

In addition to the main sections, the platform contains many others in different areas, so that every employee can find something interesting for themselves. By participating in various activities, employees can show up and earn “nickels” for their activity.

In the “Ladder of Good Deeds” section, employees can observe the “good” deeds of their colleagues and share their own, adding a new “step” (with a description of the “good deed”, for example, a trip to an animal shelter, participation in a cleanup event, etc.) to “ ladder of good deeds”, thereby continuing the collective tradition!

“Task Fair” is a new section that is still being tested by company employees. At the “fair”, an employee can create a task outside the scope of his work, but indirectly related to it. For example, develop a logo or presentation, and employees who have these skills can respond and earn nickels.

Special attention should be paid to the development of a set of banners, icons and badges

It was important for us to convey the meaning inherent in the element through visual images on the banner/badge/icon, so that employees could easily understand it intuitively.

This was not an easy task, since the target audience of the platform is employees from 20 to 60 years old, but our designers were able to develop a universal solution for all age groups.

A badge is a special element that is issued on the platform both centrally on behalf of the company, and by each employee at the request of other employees. Each badge contains information
about who can receive it and for what achievements.

What problems have we managed to overcome?

One of the main drawbacks of the old version of the platform was the inability to go to an employee’s page without using search, which caused a lot of difficulties if someone wanted to view the employee’s personal profile or say “thank you”.

In addition, the platform as a whole was outdated - outdated design, complex structure, which greatly complicated its use.

As part of the project, we eliminated several pain points for users by implementing features such as:
Easy access to personal employee profiles
The ability to say “thank you” from any section of the platform
Transparent badge donation system
Gamification when interacting with the portal

What's the end result?

As a result of the work done, Norilsk Nickel received an updated platform for employees with a modern design, user-friendly interface and thoughtful gamification mechanics, which together make the platform intuitive to use.

The updated and convenient platform attracted the attention of absolutely all employees. They began to want to look into their favorite sections, evaluate the changes and, with even greater zeal, begin to take an interest in cultural events, participate in them, share their achievements and observe the achievements of their colleagues.
